TAIRA NO MASAKADO — Japanese Ghost Series / Organic Cotton T-Shirt

An original artwork by traditional Japanese tattoo artist Horiyuki, created exclusively for us.

The third piece in our Japanese Ghost Series tells the story of Taira no Masakado (平将門) — a 10th-century warrior whose life, death and legend have made him one of the most enduring supernatural figures in Japanese history.

Masakado was a powerful warrior who led a rebellion against the imperial government in the Kantō region. After his defeat and death, history gradually became legend, and stories of his restless spirit took root in Japanese folklore. Today, Masakado is not remembered simply as a rebel or warrior: he is also revered as a protective deity, and is enshrined at Tokyo’s Kanda Myojin.

For this piece, Tokyo-based tattoo artist Horiyuki interprets Masakado through the visual language of Wabori (和彫り) — traditional Japanese tattooing, with its deep connections to warriors, folklore and the dramatic compositions of Japanese woodblock art.

The design draws on the darker mythology surrounding Masakado: the fallen warrior transformed through centuries of storytelling into a powerful supernatural presence — feared, respected and worshipped.

This collection marks the first time Horiyuki has created artwork specifically for clothing. All three designs were drawn exclusively for us, bringing the storytelling tradition of Japanese tattoo art from skin to fabric.
