OIWA — Japanese Ghost Series / Organic Cotton T-Shirt
An original artwork by traditional Japanese tattoo artist Horiyuki, created exclusively for us.
The first piece in our Japanese Ghost Series introduces Oiwa (お岩) — one of Japan’s most famous and haunting supernatural figures.
Her story comes from Yotsuya Kaidan, the celebrated Edo-period ghost tale first performed as a kabuki play in 1825. Oiwa is betrayed by her husband, Iemon, who wishes to abandon her for another woman. After being poisoned and horribly disfigured, she dies — only to return as an onryō, a vengeful spirit whose presence continues to torment those responsible for her suffering.
For this collaboration, Tokyo-based tattoo artist Horiyuki reinterprets Oiwa through the visual language of Wabori (和彫り) — traditional Japanese tattooing.
Wabori developed from Japan’s long tradition of ukiyo-e and woodblock imagery, with large, flowing compositions depicting figures from folklore, kabuki, mythology and the supernatural. Rather than treating the body as a blank surface, traditional Japanese tattooing creates a complete composition in which the figure, movement and background become one continuous image.
Horiyuki has spent his career working within this tradition. This collection marks the first time he has created artwork specifically for clothing. Each of the three designs was drawn exclusively for us, translating the atmosphere and storytelling of traditional Japanese tattoo art from skin to fabric.
Oiwa appears here in stark black and white — beautiful, unsettling and unmistakably Japanese.
Printed on organic cotton, with a small front emblem and Horiyuki’s full Oiwa artwork across the back.
