ROKUROKUBI— Japanese Ghost Series / Organic Cotton T-Shirt
An original artwork by traditional Japanese tattoo artist Horiyuki, created exclusively for us.
The second piece in our Japanese Ghost Series introduces the Rokurokubi (ろくろ首) — one of the most recognisable supernatural beings in Japanese folklore.
By day, a Rokurokubi may appear to be an ordinary woman. But after night falls, her neck stretches to an extraordinary length, allowing her head to wander far from her body. Depending on the tale, she can be eerie, mischievous or frightening — a figure existing somewhere between the human world and the supernatural.
For this piece, Tokyo-based tattoo artist Horiyuki reimagines the Rokurokubi through the visual language of Wabori (和彫り) — traditional Japanese tattooing.
Wabori has deep connections to ukiyo-e and Japanese woodblock imagery, with elaborate compositions drawing on folklore, mythology, kabuki and the supernatural. Horiyuki brings that tradition into a completely different medium, creating an illustration designed to be worn rather than tattooed.
This collection marks the first time Horiyuki has created artwork specifically for clothing. Each of the three designs was drawn exclusively for us.
Here, the elegant beauty of a traditional Japanese woman is transformed by the impossibly long, tattooed neck of the Rokurokubi — combining beauty and the uncanny in Horiyuki’s distinctive interpretation of Japanese folklore.
