A completely one-of-one piece, handmade by Groovy Japanese Boutique using an authentic vintage Japanese silk haori featuring a traditional Japanese mon (family crest).

This piece preserves the refined silhouette and character of the original haori while introducing bold contemporary detailing to give it a completely new presence.

The black silk fabric has a subtle woven texture that catches the light beautifully, while three metallic gold stripes run along the sleeves, creating a striking contrast between traditional Japanese form and modern streetwear influence.

This piece has been worn on stage by Skin of Skunk Anansie.

The result is a garment that feels elegant, powerful and distinctive — traditional in origin, but designed to be worn in a completely new context.

At the heart of GROOVY REWORKED is a desire to give Japanese garments a longer life.

In Japan, large numbers of traditional garments are discarded every year, despite the craftsmanship, history and culture contained within them.

By reworking these pieces, adding new details and presenting them in a more contemporary way, we hope to create more opportunities for traditional Japanese clothing to be worn, seen and appreciated again rather than left unused or thrown away.
