Why do I upcycle kimonos?

Kimono is such a beautiful part of Japanese tradition, yet people in Japan rarely wear them anymore — and around 500 tonnes are thrown away every year.

If they’re going to be thrown away, I’d rather cut them, stitch them, make them funky and give them a whole new life — then send them back out into the world to be loved again.

That’s why I do what I do.

For this piece, I customised a beautiful vintage wool Kasuri kimono.

Kasuri is a traditional Japanese weaving technique where sections of the yarn are dyed before being woven into the fabric. When the dyed threads are carefully aligned during weaving, they create distinctive patterns with slightly blurred or feathered edges.

These subtle irregularities are part of the beauty of Kasuri, giving each textile its own unique character and handmade feel.

This vintage wool kimono has been given a new life with modern details, combining traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary style.
