Today I continued working on a new piece for the shop — an upcycled denim jacket using vintage Japanese obi.
These jackets combine denim with bold obi patterns on the back. The contrast between the structured denim and the detailed Japanese textile creates something quite unique.
There will be a game and anime event happening near St Nicholas Market this weekend, so I’m looking forward to showing these new pieces to many visitors who enjoy Japanese culture.
The obi I use are called fukuro obi. They are traditionally constructed from three layers — the outer fabric, an inner core, and the lining.
When I reuse the outer fabric for clothing, I’m always left with the inner layers. Recently I’ve been thinking about how these remaining parts could also be reused in future pieces.
Working with vintage textiles often opens new ideas like this. Every material still has potential.
