What Is a Haori?

A Japanese Designer’s Guide to Vintage Haori Jackets

If you’ve ever seen a beautiful Japanese jacket with wide sleeves, intricate woven patterns or striking hand-dyed designs, there’s a good chance you were looking at a haori.

Originally worn over kimono in Japan, the haori has found a new life in modern wardrobes around the world. Today, a vintage haori can look just as natural worn with jeans and a simple T-shirt as it does with traditional Japanese clothing.

But what exactly is a haori, and what makes a genuine vintage Japanese haori different from the many modern garments described as “kimono jackets”?

Here’s our guide.

What is a haori?

A haori (羽織) is a traditional Japanese jacket designed to be worn over a kimono.

Unlike a kimono, a haori is shorter and is normally worn open at the front. Traditional haori may have small ties called haori-himo, which connect the two sides at the front rather than closing the jacket completely.

Haori come in many different colours, fabrics and designs. Some are understated and elegant, while others feature wonderfully expressive patterns.

That variety is one of the things that makes discovering vintage haori so enjoyable: each piece has its own character.

Is a haori the same as a kimono?

No. Although the two are closely connected, a haori and a kimono are different garments.

A kimono is a full-length traditional Japanese garment that wraps around the body and is secured with an obi.

A haori is a shorter outer jacket traditionally worn over the kimono.

You may sometimes see haori described in the UK as “kimono jackets”. This can be a useful way of describing their appearance to people unfamiliar with Japanese clothing, but technically a traditional haori is its own type of garment.

A little history of the haori

The history of the haori stretches back centuries in Japan.

Haori developed as an outer garment and were historically associated particularly with men’s clothing before becoming increasingly fashionable among women.

Over time, they developed into beautiful garments in their own right.

Vintage examples can reveal an extraordinary range of Japanese textile techniques, colours and motifs. Depending on the piece, you may encounter silk, intricate woven fabrics, dyed designs, embroidery or decorative linings.

For us, this is part of the pleasure of working with vintage Japanese clothing.

You’re not simply looking at a pattern printed onto a modern jacket. You’re discovering a piece of Japanese textile history.

What makes a vintage Japanese haori special?

One of the things we love most about vintage haori is their individuality.

Rather than buying something produced by the thousands, you can find a garment with its own fabric, pattern, age and history.

Traditional Japanese textiles can also contain wonderful details that aren’t immediately obvious.

Turn over a sleeve or look inside a vintage haori and you may discover a beautiful lining. Look closely at the fabric and you might notice details in the weave or subtle variations in a hand-dyed design.

Japanese motifs can also carry associations with nature, seasons and traditional culture.

Flowers, cranes, fans, flowing water, maple leaves and geometric patterns are just some of the designs you may encounter.

Can you wear a haori with modern clothes?

Absolutely.

You don’t need to wear a complete traditional Japanese outfit to enjoy a vintage haori.

In fact, we love seeing these garments become part of everyday wardrobes.

One of the easiest combinations is simply:

Vintage haori + plain T-shirt or top + jeans + simple shoes

Keeping the rest of the outfit relatively simple allows the textile and silhouette of the haori to become the focus.

A haori can also look beautiful over a dress or paired with wide-leg trousers.

There aren’t rigid rules about incorporating a vintage haori into contemporary fashion. Experiment and find a combination that feels natural to you.

Are haori only for women?

No.

Haori have traditionally been worn by both men and women in Japan, although styles and designs can differ.

Many vintage haori also work wonderfully as contemporary unisex clothing.

Rather than concentrating only on the gender label, it can be more useful to look at the garment’s actual measurements, proportions, colour and design.

That’s particularly important when buying vintage Japanese clothing because traditional sizing doesn’t necessarily correspond neatly with modern UK clothing sizes.

How should I choose a vintage haori?

When choosing a vintage haori online, look beyond the size written on a label.

Pay attention to measurements, particularly the width and overall length.

Then consider the textile itself.

Do you want something dramatic that becomes the centrepiece of an outfit, or something understated that you can wear regularly?

And remember that genuine vintage clothing has already had a life.

Small signs of age can sometimes be present. We think that history is part of the charm of vintage Japanese textiles, but the condition of an individual garment should always be considered before buying.

Haori, sustainability and giving beautiful clothing another life

There is another reason we’re passionate about vintage Japanese clothing: beautiful textiles deserve to be used and appreciated.

Japan has an extraordinary textile tradition, and many older kimono, haori and obi contain fabrics and craftsmanship that are simply too beautiful to be forgotten.

At Groovy Japanese Boutique, our philosophy is about giving vintage Japanese garments and textiles a new chapter.

Some pieces can continue their lives exactly as they are. Other vintage kimono and obi fabrics can inspire completely new creations.

It’s a way of connecting Japanese tradition with contemporary fashion while making use of textiles that already exist.

Authentic Japanese style in the UK

Groovy Japanese Boutique was created from a love of Japanese textiles, design and the possibilities of bringing them into modern life.

Our founder is Japanese and trained in design in Tokyo, and that connection to Japanese culture influences how we select vintage pieces and how we transform traditional textiles into contemporary designs.

For us, a vintage haori isn’t a costume.

It’s a beautiful garment that can be worn, enjoyed and given a new story.
